Why the DIT Perspective on Cameras Is Different

When a DP evaluates a camera, they're thinking about image quality, dynamic range, lens mount compatibility, ergonomics, and what the image feels like through their eyes. When a music video DIT evaluates a camera, they're thinking about all of that — plus what happens when 6 of those cameras are running simultaneously, generating terabytes of data, requiring specific card readers, demanding particular transcode workflows, and creating color management challenges that vary significantly depending on the platform.

I've managed media from every major cinema camera platform on shoots for Travis Scott, Bad Bunny, The Weeknd, and productions for Atlantic, Epic, and Def Jam. The camera that looks great in a spec sheet doesn't always look great when you're 14 hours into a shoot and you've been offloading 3 TB per hour. Here's what you actually need to know about each platform from the technical side of the cart.

ARRI ALEXA 35: The Gold Standard

The ALEXA 35 is the camera that major label, high-budget music video productions default to when budget isn't the primary constraint, and there are good reasons for that. ARRI's color science is genuinely the best in the business — the skin tones, the highlight rolloff, and the overall rendering of the image have a quality that holds up through aggressive grades and extreme treatments in ways that other cameras' images sometimes don't.

From a DIT perspective, the ALEXA 35 is one of the most pleasant cameras to work with. The ARRIRAW format is well-supported across every major tool in the pipeline — Silverstack, DaVinci Resolve, ARRI's own tools — and the LOG C3 encoding is clean and predictable. The color science is stable, meaning the image from camera 1 and camera 6 are going to match each other reliably, which matters enormously on multi-camera music video shoots where intercutting between cameras has to be seamless.

The data management consideration: ALEXA 35 shooting at 4.6K ARRIRAW generates significant data volumes. At 24fps, you're looking at roughly 1.5–2 GB per second of recording. On an 8-camera shoot, the cards coming off set can generate more than 3 TB per hour of shooting. You need high-throughput card readers (CFexpress Type B), a fast RAID system, and enough parallel reader capacity to keep pace with the camera department. Card costs are also significant — budget accordingly.

Sony VENICE 2: The Music Video Staple

The VENICE 2 has become the go-to for a large percentage of mid-to-high budget music video work, particularly for content with a fashion, beauty, or high-glamour aesthetic. The full-frame sensor creates a look — depth of field characteristics, bokeh quality, a certain "largeness" to the image — that's distinct from the ALEXA's Super 35 rendering and has become associated with a specific type of premium music video visual language.

The VENICE 2 shoots in X-OCN (eXtended tonal range Original Camera Negative), a compressed raw format that Sony developed specifically to reduce the data footprint of recording at full resolution without sacrificing image quality. From a DIT perspective, X-OCN is well-behaved and widely supported, though it requires Sony's raw viewer or DaVinci Resolve for proper decoding. The compression is genuinely impressive — you get an image that handles like raw without raw's data overhead.

The DIT consideration: the VENICE 2 uses Sony's proprietary AXS media, which requires AXS-CR1 or similar card readers. These readers are not interchangeable with any other format, so ensure your DIT cart is equipped specifically for Venice media before the shoot day. Dual-system AXS recording (recording two streams simultaneously) adds to the reader demand. The good news: AXS media is very reliable and the transfer rates are excellent when properly set up.

RED V-RAPTOR: Lightweight, High-Resolution, Run-and-Gun Ready

The V-RAPTOR sits at an interesting position in the music video camera landscape. It's significantly lighter and more compact than the ALEXA 35 or VENICE 2, which matters when you're doing handheld work, rigging cameras in tight positions, or running 8 cameras that all need operators who aren't exhausted by the end of the day. The V-RAPTOR also shoots at very high resolutions — up to 8K — which provides significant reframe latitude in post if the visual effects or motion graphics work benefits from it.

RED's REDRAW format has a reputation that's evolved significantly over the generations. The V-RAPTOR's image is genuinely good — particularly at lower ISOs — and the color science has improved substantially from earlier RED platforms. The DIT consideration with RED is the proprietary nature of the RAW format and the requirement for RED's own decryption tools or properly licensed third-party support. DaVinci Resolve handles RED RAW natively, which simplifies the on-set workflow considerably. Transcoding RED RAW at high resolutions is compute-intensive — make sure your DIT cart's workstation has the processing power to keep up with the transcode demand on a multi-camera RED shoot.

Blackmagic URSA Cine 12K: Budget-Conscious Cinema Quality

Blackmagic has been making a serious case for the professional cinema market for several years, and the URSA Cine 12K represents the most compelling version of that argument yet. The camera shoots Blackmagic RAW at resolutions up to 12K with a color science that has matured considerably from earlier generations. For music video productions where the budget makes an ARRI package unrealistic, the URSA Cine 12K provides genuine cinema-quality results.

From a DIT perspective, Blackmagic RAW (BRAW) is one of the most DIT-friendly formats in existence. The codec is efficient, DaVinci Resolve's native BRAW support is excellent (Blackmagic makes both the camera and the software, so the integration is deep), and the metadata handling is clean. The file sizes are manageable even at high resolutions due to the codec's efficiency. The card media — CFexpress Type B for the Cine — is standard and well-supported across multiple readers.

The honest limitation: the color science, while good, doesn't have the decades of cinema color development behind it that ARRI's does. For skin tones and extreme grades, an experienced colorist can get outstanding results, but it requires more attention in the color pipeline from the DIT on set to the colorist in post. The investment in a properly calibrated on-set grade — with CDL values that give the colorist a strong starting point — pays off more significantly with BRAW than with ARRIRAW or X-OCN.

iPhone / Mirrorless: When It's an Aesthetic Choice, Not a Compromise

Some of the most visually interesting music videos of the past few years have been shot on iPhone or mirrorless cameras — not because of budget limitations, but because the aesthetic those platforms produce is exactly what the director wanted. The lo-fi quality, the specific color rendering, the way the image responds in low light — these can be deliberate creative choices that serve the video's visual concept.

From a DIT perspective, these productions require a different mindset. The data management side is simpler — file sizes are smaller, formats are more universally compatible, and the hardware setup is less complex. But the color management challenge is real. Mirrorless cameras shooting LOG profiles have color science that varies enormously between manufacturers and even between models, and getting consistent matches between multiple mirrorless bodies is considerably harder than getting consistent matches between multiple ALEXAs. If you're running multiple iPhones or mirrorless cameras and you need them to intercult cleanly, invest in proper on-set color management — the tools exist to do it, but it takes intentional attention.

The DIT Workflow Matters as Much as the Camera

Whatever camera your production chooses, the technical pipeline behind it determines how well the image holds up through post. An ALEXA 35 with a careless data management workflow is a worse choice than a URSA Cine with a rigorous one. The camera generates the image; the DIT pipeline protects it, manages it, and delivers it to editorial in a form that gives the colorist and editor every possible advantage.
